March 7, 2011

We have really come so far in the creation of this production.  I am so pleased with your performances and know that in the next few days you will be refining them even further.  You all look so impressive and our gorgeous set compliments.  It surpasses my initial vision.  I guess you can tell I am happy.

Tonight we run through again.  We will begin at 7 PM.  This with be a technical rehearsal so the technical issues will continued to be worked out and we may at times need to stop the run.  Thank you for your patience.

Tomorrow and Thursday are full dress rehearsals and we will begin at 7:30 which is the same start time as the actual performances.  Beginning tomorrow we ask that all cast and crew report to the theatre at 6:30 to prepare (call at 6:30).  If you have concerns or questions please bring them to the attention of Bill H., stage manager, Bret, assistant director, or myself.

This show has really come together and I am very pleased.  Thanks for your hard work.

Rehearsal went even better last night and it is looking like it should.  Keep studying your lines so that you can be off book ASAP.  This will give you freedom to portray your character authentically.  Remember to feel it not fake it.

Tonight we run through the show.  Rehearsal at 7 PM.  We will also have a second costume review so that lighting designers can understand how to light you up.

See you tonight.

I was pleased with run through last night and love how things look on the set.  We need to be off book to take the play to performance level so keep working.  It is appreciated.

I have made some decisions to edit a few scenes in addition to what Bret has given you.  I will give you those changes tonight when we go over last night's notes.  We need to shorten the length and although I realize we will decrease time as we pick up the pace it is still too long.  We will be editing even further for the school shows so be prepared.

I am very happy with the overall production and think you have a great show.  Thanks for all your ongoing work.  See you at rehearsal tonight a 7PM.  All cast are called for the run through.  Today is the deadline for bios.  I finally got mine in this morning so don't delay further.

Rehearsal tonight at 7 PM.  Run Part 2.  All cast are called to rehearsal.  If you are not working on the run Brett will be available to asisst you with your character and help choreograph the long pieces.  Brett has also been given permission by me to cut parts of the scenes to assist with getting the play down to a reasonable length of time.  If you have questions let me know.

You don't want to miss Romeo & Juliet at the Barrow-Civic Theatre.

Directing a play that is as timeless as Romeo & Juliet by the Master, William Shakespeare, is a delightful opportunity to visit some of the worlds best ever story telling.  The characters are so passionate and the twists and turns that human drama is full of such as love, hate, joy, and death never get old even though the language of the play is.  This production will invite the audience into a timeless dream where time and place are not as important as the meaning of the story itself.

Romeo and Juliet are what we call in our modern age “just kids.”  They want what they want when they want it and they want it all now.  Family life being what it is and the lack of tolerance for families that are “different” create the fertile ground in which rebellious love can flourish.  The tragedy of this play is that what was loved most, the children, choose death over a life without the love they so passionately crave.  Of course the parents vow to never forget them and promise never to carry on a hate filled grudge again but what they have lost can never be replaced.

The set design by Ted Smith promises to be a dynamic piece of the production in which the characters of this masterpiece become animated players in a life size expression of modern art.  Costumes by Lisa Harry continue to accent the dream like experience and compliment each character’s expression of themselves.  Something old becomes new again and just in time for spring.

Last night went very well.  I am getting REALLY excited.  This is going to be a great production.  Tonight we will be working on Part 1 again and we will pick up where we left off on Monday.  If we have time we will return to the beginning of Part 1 and rehearse again.  ALL CAST ARE CALLED TO REHEARSAL.  If you are not on stage or waiting for an entrance talk to Bret about anything you want some coaching on (don't be shy...that is what he is there for and I can't assign special sessions all the time).  If you are not in need of the coaching please study your lines.  Every hour counts at this stage of rehearsal.

The costume parade is moved to tomorrow night, February 24th.  Stage manager, Bill H. (hubby) will begin talking to cast members about various set changes that will be taking place during the show.  I would like these assignments to be made now so that you can be aware of what you will be doing to assist a scene and keep it in mind as you rehearse.

Thank you again for your committment.  See you tonight.

As to be expected, transition to the main stage was choppy and there is much work to do to get our production up, running, and at the performance level.  But, I am sure we will.

Tonight we will run Part 2.  All cast members are called to rehearsal even if you are not in this part because since we have an assistant director, he can pull you aside and assist with various scenes that need work.  Also, when you are not busy you can be studying your lines.  This is an important phase in the rehearsal process so please stay committed, focused, and aware of what is going on around you.

Thanks so much for all your hard work.  See you tonight.

February 19, 2011

Sorry about the cancellation on last Thursday.  Hope everyone enjoyed the extra break.  This weekend is the beginning of crunch time.  We are gathering set pieces on Sunday so if you are available please meet at the theater at 1 PM.  On Monday, February 21st, we will be running Part 1 of the show.  This is all scenes up to and including ACT 3, scene 1.

Lisa will need you to try on various costuming pieces next week and if you have agreed to bring in personal items to be used as part of your costume please bring these items in beginning Monday.  Our costume parade is on Wednesday, February 23rd, and hopefully we can asses everyone and determine if the costume will work for the show.

We are at the stage where I am really going to be pushing everyone to project, be consistent with blocking and stage gestures, and portray the character you are playing.  Please do not ever take anything I might say to you that is critical in nature personally.  You are my cast and I am going to do what I need to do to pull out your very best performance.  Study lines.  We are off book February 28th.

     See you soon.

Set pieces will be moved from the warehouse to the theatre on Sunday, February 20th.  Your help is greatly needed and will continue to be needed as we build, paint, and dress the set.  Again, your committment to YOUR show is essential as myself and your production staff do everything we can to make Romeo & Juliet a memorable experience at the Barrow.

January 15, 2011

Welcome

Don't miss auditions for Romeo & Juliet at the Barrow tomorrow at 2 PM.  The cast of characters include:

Romeo: The son and heir of Montague and Lady
Montague. A young man of about sixteen, Romeo is
handsome, intelligent, and sensitive. Though impulsive
and immature, his idealism and passion make him an
extremely likable character. He lives in the middle of a
violent feud between his family and the Capulets, but
he is not at all interested in violence.

Juliet: The daughter of Capulet and Lady Capulet. A
beautiful thirteen-year-old girl, Juliet begins the play as a
naïve child who has thought little about love and
marriage, but she grows up quickly upon falling in love
with Romeo, the son of her family’s great enemy.

Friar Lawrence: A Franciscan friar, friend to both Romeo
and Juliet. Kind, civic-minded, a proponent of
moderation, and always ready with a plan, Friar
Lawrence secretly marries the impassioned lovers in
hopes that the union might eventually bring peace to
Verona.

Mercutio: A kinsman to the Prince, and Romeo’s close
friend. One of the most extraordinary characters in all of
Shakespeare’s plays, Mercutio overflows with
imagination, wit, and, at times, a strange, biting satire
and brooding fervor.

The Nurse: Juliet’s nurse, the woman who breast-fed
Juliet when she was a baby and has cared for Juliet her
entire life. A vulgar, long-winded, and sentimental
character, the Nurse provides comic relief with her
frequently inappropriate remarks and speeches.

Tybalt: A Capulet, Juliet’s cousin on her mother’s side.
Vain, fashionable, supremely aware of courtesy and the
lack of it, he becomes aggressive, violent, and quick to
draw his sword when he feels his pride has been injured.

Capulet: The patriarch of the Capulet family, father of
Juliet, husband of Lady Capulet, and enemy, for
unexplained reasons, of Montague. He truly loves his
daughter, though he is not well acquainted with Juliet’s
thoughts or feelings, and seems to think that what is best
for her is a “good” match with Paris.

Lady Capulet: Juliet’s mother, Capulet’s wife. A woman
who herself married young (by her own estimation she
gave birth to Juliet at close to the age of fourteen), she is
eager to see her daughter marry Paris.

Montague: Romeo’s father, the patriarch of the
Montague clan and bitter enemy of Capulet. At the
beginning of the play, he is chiefly concerned about
Romeo’s melancholy.

Lady Montague: Romeo’s mother, Montague’s wife. She
dies of grief after Romeo is exiled from Verona.

Paris: A kinsman of the Prince, and the suitor of Juliet
most preferred by Capulet.

Benvolio: Montague’s nephew, Romeo’s cousin and
thoughtful friend, he makes a genuine effort to defuse
violent scenes in public places, though Mercutio accuses
him of having a nasty temper in private

Prince Escalus: The Prince of Verona. A kinsman of
Mercutio and Paris.

Friar John: A Franciscan friar charged by Friar Lawrence
with taking the news of Juliet’s false death to Romeo in
Mantua.

Balthasar: Romeo’s dedicated servant, who brings
Romeo the news of Juliet’s death, unaware that her
death is a ruse.

Sampson and Gregory: Two servants of the house of
Capulet, who, like their master, hate the Montagues.

Abraham: Montague’s servant, who fights with Sampson
and Gregory in the first scene of the play.

The Apothecary: An apothecary in Mantua.

Peter: A Capulet servant who invites guests to Capulet’s
feast and escorts the Nurse to meet with Romeo. He is
illiterate, and a bad singer.

Rosaline: The woman with whom Romeo is infatuated at
the beginning of the play.

The Chorus: The Chorus is a single character who
functions as a narrator offering
commentary on the play’s

      Hope to see you.
